The development of rotorcraft in Britain during the period before World War II was dominated by the presence of the Autogiro.This was largely due to the fact that Cierva established his Autogiro operations in the UK.There was of course some pioneering work with helicopters, but most of this was of an experimental nature and was not generally exploited to achieve production. A notable example of this phenomenon was that of Louis Brennan's helicopter, which achieved a hover capability as early as 1925, but was abandoned by the Air Ministry in favor of Autogiro development, which was considered to offer a far more promising approach.
