Though the rotorcraft industry has come through the past 18 months in arguably better shape than have many other aerospace sectors, this has nevertheless been a difficult period for the world's helicopter manufacturers. The good news is that some positive signs are already appearing, indicating that a market turnaround is not too far off in the future. Among these are early signs of economic recovery, albeit more so in Asia and perhaps Europe than in North America. In such a situation, the geographic diversity of civil rotor-craft demand stands the industry in good stead: more than half of all new orders for civil helicopters now come from outside North America. And, customer surveys and other data indicate that the North Americanrnshare of the civil market may even shrink a bit further in the next five to 10 years.
