For many years, members of the civil rotorcraft community have viewed short haul VTOL commuter applications as a sort of holy grail. If only rotorcraft could fly affordably and quietly from city center to city center, with sufficient range, speed and payload, demand for helicopters and tiltrotors flying scheduled operations would increase dramatically. In addition, the use of rotorcraft would ease congestion at major airports.
