The Joint Heavy Lift (JHL) program is alive and well. The DoD is very interested in the capabilities that a heavy lift VTOL aircraft can provide and is investing in the design and technologies needed to realize such a system. JHL is the VTOL candidate for the Joint Future Theater Lift QFTL) requirement which is working through the Joint Capabilities Integrated Documentation System (JCIDS) now. The Initial Capability Document (ICD) is expected to be approved by the Joint Requirements Oversight Council later this year and a Joint Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) is to be completed in time to inform the POM 12 Budget cycle. My intent here is to give you a description of the extensive activity ongoing now in preparation for a future decision on Advanced Technology Development.
