The new head of the European Union's armaments agency in Brussels, Alexander Weiss, has called for EU nations to jointly develop a new transport helicopter "to reduce reliance on U.S. military technology." He argues that cooperation among EU nations, particularly France and Germany and Italy and the U.K., might allow the EU to improve its helicopter design capabilities and better compete with the United States. The French and Germans need about 60 new military medium lift to heavy lift transport helicopters to modernize their fleet, but Mr. Weiss recommends an order of at least 100 or more aircraft to facilitate the creation of a new helicopter capable of carrying payloads of up to 30 tons of troops or equipment. Under consideration is something between Boeing's CH-47 Chinook and the Joint Heavy Lift now being scrutinized by the Department of Defense - something, however, which according to Weiss must be of European design rather than U.S.
