It was show time at the Dallas Convention Center and the Helicopter Association International (HAI) Heli-Expo did not disappoint. The event, held February 26 through 29, attracted a record-setting 15,000 attendees and 520 exhibitors occupying more than 220,000 square feet. At Bell Helicopter's display, visitors were treated to views of the firm's newest design, the Bell 417, featuring a nose-mounted forward-looking infrared camera, high skids and other improvements developed as part of Bell's Modular Affordable Product Line (MAPL), plus the new Honeywell HTS900 engine (you might imagine a Bell 407 on steroids). The display also included a BA609 tiltrotor and a Bell 429 IFR-capable medium to light twin. While CEO Mike Redenbaugh regaled attendees with a spirited commentary on Bell's expanding sales, technical prowess and agility, Cirque de Soleil aerial acrobats performed heart-stopping twists and spins 60 feet above the floor. The metaphor was not lost on the audience. Redenbaugh said Bell reported revenue of $2.1 billion in 2005, an increase of 28% over 2004. Bell also took orders for 100 aircraft during the three-days of HAI, compared to orders for 34 helicopters at HAI 2005. The Bell 429 is pictured above.
