The arrival of the first two Eurocopter Armed Reconnaissance Helicopters (ARH) Tigers is in itself "A Great Day for the Army," as the Australian Chief of Army, Lieutenant General Peter F. Leahy, said as he accepted the new helicopters at the Change of Command Parade on December 15, 2004, at the Army Airfield Oakey. "The Great Day for Australia" refers to the far more important part the Tiger will play in making the Army and other services a "Mobile, Fast, Hard Hitting Force." The mobile element will be improved with the introduction into service of the Eurocopter Multi Role Helicopter 90 (based on the NH90) as an assault helicopter. These two machines will provide a force multiplier for the Australian Army Aviation Corps (AAAvnC), as these aircraft have been proven in operations in many countries and in a variety of operations such as the Global War On Terror, UN support in Cambodia and East Timor, peace keeping in the Pacific Region, and in disaster relief operations in Australia and throughout the region, as in the recent tsunami.
