The years of the rotorcraft industry in the US were marked by entrepreneurs who funded much of the research and development (R&D) themselves; the design requirements were focused on making the aircraft fly with some measure of control, and the design tools were slide rules, vellum, a drawing board and pencils. In the 1950s and 60s the Korean and Vietnam wars fueled the need for quantity production of aircraft that could move troops and carry simple weapons, and the urgency meant the ability to deliver platforms that met these relatively simple requirements was more important that minimizing life cycle cost. Thus, all 334 of the H-21 Shawnee aircraft were delivered in 9 years from program start to the final aircraft rolling off the production line. Similarly, the CH-47A Chinook accomplished the same thing with 344 aircraft in 11 years. Today, the MV-22 Osprey, with a planned production buy of 360, aircraft has passed 20 years of development, with the end of production now scheduled at least 10 years away.
