University Testbeds Demonstrate Major Advances in Autonomous Rotorcraft Control Software

The DARPA Software-Enabled Control (SEC) program has made major strides over the past five years in advancing the control software design and implementation of autonomous vehicles. These technologies have now been demonstrated on both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, with Georgia Tech and UC Berkeley each achieving major breakthroughs, as demonstrated on their autonomous helicopters test-beds. Because the goal of the program was to achieve autonomous behavior with a re-usable control software infrastructure, much of the same technology was implemented on very different platforms, including micro air vehicles and full-size helicopters. In fact, past demonstrations included autonomous behaviors on fixed-wing aircraft using the very same infrastructure and very similar algorithms. SEC researchers hope that, eventually, autonomous control systems can be designed in a nearly platform-independent environment, so that autonomy can be incrementally improved and transferred from platform to platform.
