The content of Parts 1, 2 and 3 of this series in earlier issues of Vertiflite (Summer 2003, Fall 2003, and Winter 2003) examined the theoretical basis of the autogiro and its technical innovations that ultimately led to the development of the helicopter. While the autogiro was to have some limited military success, particularly in Britain, it was not to prove successful on a large-scale commercial basis. In his recent book (Ref. 1), Bruce Charnov gives many reasons for this, including the failure of the autogiro to impress the US military, the impact of the Great Depression, and perhaps just plain old bad luck. Perhaps it was the premature death of Juan de la Cierva in 1936 - the loss of one of the prime movers in the autogiro business - that was the real reason. But it was certainly not for want of trying, because Harold Pitcairn relentlessly promoted the autogiro for many different commercial uses. This was accompanied by a blitz of advertising on the autogiro to the private owner as a super-safe, easy to fly aircraft, which it was, when flown skillfully.
