On June 1st, at the AHS Forum, the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation announced the initiation of a company-funded experimental helicopter, dubbed the X2 Technology Demonstrator, with an expected cruise speed of 250 kt (463 km/hr). The tandem seat coaxial rotor demonstrator - augmented by a pusher propeller for a compound configuration - is planned to be the forerunner of a new breed of potential products: Sikorsky calls it "Full Spectrum Performance" - meaning it will hover as efficiently as any other helicopter, but is expected to fly faster than any other helicopter. In its press release, Sikorsky stated that it had selected the term "X2 Technology" to describe "the multiplying effects (2X, or times 2) of applying a suite of modern technologies to coaxial helicopters. These technologies include new rotor blade designs, advanced flight control laws, transmissions with greater horsepower to weight performance and the ability to seamlessly transfer power from the main rotor to the aft propulser, and active vibration control."
