It has been 55 years since the then-Aerospatiale SA330 Puma took its maiden flight on April 15, 1965. The helicopter continues to serve in a battlefield role today, evolving over time but appearing nearly unchanged from those first airframes that rolled off the production lines in France and England. The SA330 continues to support battlefield operations with many countries around the globe today. While the SA330 was followed on the production line by military versions of the Super Puma (AS532/AS332M/EC725/H215M) - and its larger derivative (the EC225/H225/H225M Super Puma) - the robustness and versatility of the SA330 has seen the aircraft operate in both the Arctic and the Antarctic, the jungles of Africa, the deserts of the Middle East, throughout Central and South America and the Far East. The French Army Light Aviation (Aviation legere de l'armee de Terre, ALAT) has a number of detachments outside of France, predominantly in former colonies on the sub-Saharan continent, where it has SA330s in Senegal, Djibouti and Cameroon. Since the retirement of the Aerospatiale Super Frelon in April 2010 from the French Naval Aviation (Aeronavale), which had carried out vertical replenishment (VERTREP) for the fleet, there has been nothing to replace this large helicopter in the role. As a solution, the French Navy (Marine Nationale) has utilized the ALAT SA330 Puma to cover this role, embarked on the Charles de Gaulle nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.
