On Aug. 2,1990, Iraq President Saddam Hussein, ordered the invasion of Kuwait with tanks rolling across the border. A United Nations resolution followed, with the majority of the international community denouncing Iraq. Operation Desert Shield began with the US armed forces - followed swiftly by the United Kingdom and France - to set up a protective cordon around Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Oman against the potential threat from further expansion of Iraqi incursions. Under a UN resolution, the go-ahead to liberate Kuwait from Iraqi control began with the Desert Storm air strikes on Jan. 17. Ground incursions began in late January, but the Allied invasion of Iraq began on Feb. 24, lasting four days. The threats, which came from the Iraqi Air Force, Army, Navy and Republican Guard, combined with the constant threat of attacks from the Russian-supplied Scud intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM), proved challenging. Priority was the use of special forces such as the US Army Delta Force, US Navy's Sea Air Land (SEAL) teams, and the British Army 22nd Special Air Service (SAS), to go behind enemy lines to neutralize the Scud threat and disrupt the Iraqi war machine, and to prevent Israel from being drawn into the war.
