Rarely, especially in the age of the internet, are we surprised by unknown vertical flight machines that were designed or tested by the early pioneers. We have all seen grainy photos of early inventors that were determined to get off the ground vertically, instead of running down a hill in gliders or some other contraption. Many failed, but a few eventually succeeded in making the "miracle" that is vertical flight a reality. Although many of those early blurry pictures are recycled online ad nauseum, helicopter historians may still have lots to discover about early experimenters. Two of them, equally brave and equally challenged by the aeronautical technological maturity of the times, were recently brought to light by Louisiana historian Michael Wynne.
