I have worked in Africa for a good many years now, as I'm Africa correspondent for Italian newspaper Corriere delle Sera. I've always been fascinated by the culture and history of this wildly diverse continent, so when I was asked to report on the controversial transportation of such an amazing piece of historical architecture as the Axium obelisk from Rome back to its original home, I jumped at the chance. I'd been aware of the obelisk in Rome when it stood outside the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. And while it was impressive there somehow, having visited the site where it would end up, I knew this was where it really belonged. I just wondered if I would be able to relay the story, and more importantly the pictures recording such a momentous occasion. I felt the Italian people might be more ready to accept losing a monument that had, in its own way become as much a part of Rome as the Pantheon.
