From single person operations right through to small and medium-sized enterprises, giant corporate entities and government departments, demand for connectivity has never been greater. Broadband access is now taken for granted in office environments, while 3G mobile phones, data cards and other 3G wireless devices are starting to become standard issue for users on the move. Expectations have increased too. No longer is it acceptable for workers traveling outside of the office, or located at a temporary base, to be out of touch with the Internet or their corporate network. The idea of coping without and waiting to get back to the office is increasingly less acceptable in business culture, a chang that is driving demand for the mobile office. Although this concept has been around for some time, in reality it can be a challenge to achieve. Establishing both voice and data links, or just maintaining a connection, can prove problematic. Wireless networks can be patchy, as there are numerous locations where they can't, don't or won't go. Even if a dial-up connection is available, it's excruciatingly slow when you're used to broadband. Imagine if there was a small, highly portable solution that extended 3G beyond its current boundaries to virtually anywhere on the planet. What if this was affordable to buy and cost-effective to use, while being versatile, quick to set up and easy to use? The Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) from Inmarsat is making this a reality.
