It may look like a museum piece but the Georg Stage, a three-masted, full-rigged ship is anything but. This fully operational sail training ship for the Danish merchant marine is, at 54 metres, the smallest full-rigged sailing ship in the world and is home to around sixty cadets for five months every year. While on board, they are schooled in the art of seamanship, with lessons varying in everything from tying knots and learning how to row a boat to the rather more daunting skills of terrestrial navigation and learning how the engine room works. Being a sail boat though means they also have to get to grips with the terrifying tasks of climbing the rigging, furling sails and hauling sheets. Other challenges include coming to terms with the lack of privacy, space and nearly all the modern amenities one takes for granted on shore. For example there's no TV and you have to sleep in a hammock. This is not a training course for the fainthearted!
