Ho Chi Minh was born in a poor village in Central Viet Nam in 1890, around the time when Kipling predicted, "Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet." This prophecy imbued with the myth of the White man's burden (1899) has proved wrong as history unravels. In the 20th century, people drew closer together and adapted more and more to other cultures. Reasons for this include profound economic, political and social changes caused by the third industrial revolution, decolonization, third-worldism, the nuclear threat, and common problems of humanity. Elitists have emerged, or the blend of the East and the West, as Indira Gandhi puts it.~1 Ho Chi Minh is included in the line of such well-known people as Tagore, Mahatma Gandhi, Aurobindo, Romain Rolland, Lafcadio Hearn, Pearl Buck, Hermann Hesse, and Kazantzakis.
