In early 2014, Google announced Project Tango, which involved a partnership with universities, research institutions, and industrial partners to give mobile devices an understanding of space and motion. More than one year later, the device is now available to the public. The project specifically concentrated all of the technology gathered from its various partners into a single mobile phone containing customized hardware and software designed to track the full 3D motion of the device while simultaneously creating a map of the environment. Sensors in the device update its position and orientation and combine the data into a single 3D model of the space around the user.
