In the early 1870s, at the time of publication of the fifth edition of Leaves of Grass in a volume over 500 pages in length, much expanded from the slender first edition of 1855, Walt Whitman (1819-1892) professed in his notebook: "In these Leaves every thing is literally photographed. Nothing is poeticized." The claim is at first surprising in its equivalency between the relatively impersonal mechanical medium and the lyrical and bardic corpus of Whitman verse. After all, his poems are adamantly subjective and often fanciful in spirit and unfixed or generic in their attention to particulars of the moment. Yet the claim is also appropriate in its state-
