摘要

Many previously-published works on the history of the U.S. Navy's involvement in the World War II Battle of the Atlantic, such as those by Samuel Elliot Morison and Clay Blair, have analyzed and re-analyzed the difficulties and challenges that the U.S. Navy faced in providing effective antisubmarine warfare (abbreviated AS W herein) escorts for merchant convoys. The majority of these books assess the issues from an overall strategic and higher-level operational level, but few published works (if any) examine the more detailed problems and limitations in early U.S. Navy ship sonar system technology and operational doctrine/training that existed in the years immediately following the entry of the U.S. into the Battle of the Atlantic, and that resulted in significant shortcomings in the effectiveness of U.S. Naval escorts in the early years of operation.
