On 23-24 September 1944, during the U.S. invasion of Peleiu, the Imperial Japanese Army (DA) attempted to reinforce the island from the neighboring island of Babelthuap by means of a fleet of barges. Most of these barges were destroyed by a combination of USN ships, shore based artillery and counter-attacking USMC amphibious tractors (Amtracs).
