During the era of the Dreadnought-type capital ship, their heavy guns were highly obvious, but the equipment and methods used to direct the fire of those guns were not. Yet, that equipment and those methods were what made the more obvious heavy guns effective in battle. This book outlines the subject of gunnery fire control, as it applied to capital ship and cruiser design from the start of the twentieth century to the end of the battleship era. It describes the nature of the gunnery problem, and the range-finders, gun directors and fire control equipment that was developed to solve that problem.
