Number 31 of the "Warships in Action" series, this book deals with the most sophisticated and combat-capable class of destroyers that has yet been built for the United States Navy. The origins of the design in the 1970s are covered, along with design changes caused by developments in weapons and sensor technology, and the lessons of the Falkland Islands War. A detailed description of the first ship in the class, the DDG-51, is next, including information on the persons that some of the ships are named after. The three different subgroups in the class are listed, giving builder and the dates of laying down, launching and entry into service for each one.
