Georgia and Russia had maintained an uneasy peace since 1992 when both South Ossetia and Abkhazia (a region bordering the Black Sea) were involved in a civil war with Georgia. At that time, both these ethnically diverse provinces would witness much ethnic cleansing. Russian troops have been stationed in both regions since that conflict acting as "peacekeepers"-really status-quo keepers.rnGeorgia, in an attempt to reintegrate South Ossetia into Georgia, attacked on the night of 7/8 August 2008. This poorly planned attack, lacking vital military equipment, brought down the full wrath of Russia, and a quick defeat.rnRussia had long wanted to resolve its diplomatic and ethnic problems with Georgia over South Ossetia and Abkhazia and had as recently as July 2008 conducted a military maneuver called "Kavkaz-2008." This practice maneuver involved land, air, and sea forces operating as a joint force practicing land, cyber, air, and sea operations, including amphibious operations on the Black Sea coastline. The attack on 7/8 August allowed the Russian forces to quickly move and implement their planning.
