The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) is often overlooked in the reckoning of the top ten or so Navies of the world. The reason the Australian Navy is so often overlooked in calculating the world sea powers is that she hasn't operated an aircraft carrier since 1982. This fact coupled with her remote geographical location in the Southwest Pacific causes commentators to ignore the power of her surface and submarine fleet. It needs to be remembered that the Royal Australian Navy has been a regional naval power within the Pacific Island Community since World War II. While Indonesia boasts a larger navy, it lacks the trained seaman to engage the Australian Navy in battle. India, however, with its aircraft carrier would be a formidable foe for the Australian Navy to fight outside of its Australian home waters.
