In 2011, the Malaysian Navy announced that the 10MP ships would be optimized for ASW rather than being built in the general-purpose configuration. At this point, the possibility that some other design would be considered for these ships was suggested. By mid-year this possibility had become a reality, with both the 10MP and 11 MP groups of ships being opened to alternative solutions. DCNS immediately leaped at this prospect, offering its Gowind-class light frigate for this requirement. Meanwhile, an unidentified third bidder is also reported to have contacted the Malaysian Navy.
