Naval shipyards were severely impacted by COVID-19. During the initial wave of the pandemic, a number of shipyards came to a near grinding halt due to the large number of workers affected by the virus. The situation became so dire in the United States that the U.S. Navy activated over 1,600 reservists to fill in for the out-sick workers under what has been called the U.S. Navy's Surge Maintenance program. But while a vast number of ship construction schedules have been delayed, the pandemic has had relatively little negative impact on aircraft carrier and amphibious assault ship construction because of the lengthy time required to build such ships in comparison to, say, a frigate.
