The world is longing for production of bio-fuels, notably bio-ethanol or bio-diesel, to cater for the ever-growing energy demand for transportation of goods and people.rnBio-fuels can be produced from most organic matter with high contents of starch and oil, or even through conversion of the bio-gas, methane.rnLet us be clear: the task of providing a small fraction of the world demand of fuel for transportation is frightening. Depending on climate the necessary land for running an average passenger car on bio-fuel is between one-third and over one hectare. Considering that the world has over 600 million passenger cars and around 1500 million hectares of arable land, passenger cars alone would most likely require one-quarter of the available arable land. Some industrialized countries with high population densities may need as much as five times their present total agricultural land area for fuelling their transportation. The present modest attempts worldwide to produce bio-fuels from agricultural produce have significantly increased the prices of agricultural commodities such as corn, wheat and rapeseed. If a large-scale conversion of agricultural land materialized, inevitably natural areas will shrink and poor populations will get even poorer. These constraints should mean that those bio-fuels which are based on produce that competes with food production for land are regarded as a niche product that can only be tolerated to a minor extent worldwide.
