Transfer stations siting in India: A feasibility demonstration

In Indian urban areas the highest amount (~85%) of the total expenditure for MSWM system is spent on waste collection, whereas the collection efficiency is about 70% (Ghose et al., 2006). MSW collection efficiency can be increased also with the help of transfer stations (TSs). A TS is an intermediate station between the waste generation sources and processing/disposal sites to enhance the efficacy of waste collection system. Often, TSs are placed close to waste generation areas to compact, consolidate and hold MSW from primary collection vehicles (PCVs). This compacted MSW is then transported to the processing/disposal facilities using secondary collection vehicles (SCVs). TSs are classified as: (a) direct load; (b) storage load; and (c) combined direct and discharge load, based on the methodology for SCVs loading. In this column, economic feasibility for mechanised direct load TSs siting has been demonstrated for Indian urban centres.
