There is no official birthday of the garbage truck, no calendar date that marks the moment the first one rolled onto a cobblestone street. The first refuse trucks were almost certainly produced in the shadows of garages, by mechanics tinkering with the early generation of open-end and dump trucks, modifying them so they could hold and transport waste. All we know is that 100 years ago, the first primitive trash trucks were removing society's rubbish from the curb. (The photo above shows a Gramm 6-ton dump truck being tested for trash disposal. It was taken in New York City in 1913.) We also know that we shouldn't let this milestone pass by without honoring these magnificent machines.
