France has been undertaking efforts to reduce water losses from its drinking water networks from 21.9% in 2008 to 15% in the short-term, and to 5 to 10% in areas of high urbanisation. Developing a detailed description of all drinking water systems is the first step that is necessary to be able to develop and implement an effective action plan to reduce water losses. Sylvain Charriere, Eddy Renaud and Caty Werey discuss the recommendations laid out in the guide to the establishment of this description of drinking water systems laid out by the French Scientific and Technical Association for Water and Environment (ASTEE), which covers asset management guidelines and how effective asset management starts with the good knowledge of the drinking water system.
