摘要

University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health research reveals customers in areas with combined sewer systems discharging to potable water sources face a significantly increased risk of gastrointestinal illness. The research, published in Environmental Health Perspectives, looked at daily visits to hospital for gastrointestinal illness over a four year period in three areas of Massachusetts -a group of towns with combined sewer systems that overflow into the Merrimack river, which is a drinking water source; a group of cities and towns with combined systems that overflow into Boston Harbour, a recreational water; and nine towns without combined systems in the Plymouth region.
