The Inter-American Development Bank is providing a $16.8 million loan to Guyana to strengthen and improve access to water and sanitation services. The programme to improve water and sanitation infrastructure and supply calls for infrastructure projects to build, upgrade and expand water treatment plants and enhance access to adequate sanitation. This will be achieved through measures to strengthen the supplier, Guyana Water Incorporated. The work will also design and implement a programme to monitor non-registered water and a public awareness campaign on the use of water and hygiene. The programme is expected to increase the number of households with 24-hour access to water, and water pressure in line with national standards, as well as a reduction in unaccounted-for water and an increased number of homes with improved access to drinking water and proper sanitation arrangements.
