The most significant use of desalination is the production of potable water from sea-water: That application makes up 62.4% of the market. Brackish water desalination represents another 20%, followed by river water desalination at 7.5%.rnDesalination became standard for municipal water supplies in the 1990s, which is the primary user (66.2%), followed by industrial (23.5%), the power industry (5.5%), agriculture (1.7%), and the tourism industry and the military. (Statistics courtesy of the International Desalination Association and Global Water Intelligence DesalData service) Although growth of the industry has slowed somewhat, combined capacity of existing high-quality water reuse plants has increased by 12.4% in the last year to 28 million cubic meters per day, which is still less than half the capacity of the world's desalination plants.
