Faced with over-enriched waterways, U.S. states nationwide are ratcheting down on the levels of nutrients that primary sources, such as wastewater treatment plants, are allowed to discharge. Now, researchers have identified a major but previously overlooked source of phosphorus that may be contributing heavily to eutrophication in some lakes, rivers, and streams.
