摘要

A popular saying among outdoor enthusiasts is taking on a whole new meaning at the site of the world's largest environmental cleanup project. Hydrologists responsible for monitoring groundwater contamination from the Hanford site — a 1518-km~2 site in southeastern Washington that once was home to nine nuclear reactors — are using the "leave no trace" principle when it comes to tracking groundwater pollutants. By utilizing small, camouflaged plastic tubes, researchers are adding to the picture of groundwater contamination as it makes its way toward the Columbia River while leaving the landscape undisturbed.
