摘要

In closing my address I would like to reiterate the contribution that this Institution is making to a better and more sustainable environment. In the past, accountants, managers and investors have been sceptical of 'spend today for savings tomorrow'. Through CIWEM, we will generate such pressure for change that people are positively demanding the prospect of a sustainable future, rather than maximising today's returns. As the role of the Environmental Professional becomes established, I am confident that we will be able to support the changes that society must make. I have optimism for the future. My optimism is embedded in science and our ability to engineer change for the common good. We can do most things: the complexity and speed of the world-wide web, the sophisticated and reliable systems of the motorcar, and the rocket and satellite technology that can inform us of our own planet and other space systems - we can do it when we want to. Sustainability is not just a matter of technology. We require commitment from society and governments to contribute to securing our future. Ultimately, the solution can only be a political solution that we as environmentalists, scientists, and engineers can inform, support and guide. As CIWEM President, I will engage in complementary activities to promote the technologies and skills of our members and to bridge the divide between the technical and political bodies. In this Institution we are applying the resources within the membership to support the long-term security of the biosphere. Our members are remarkable as individuals. We have demonstrated that, as a group, we can influence change (ⅰ) through the development of technologies, (ⅱ) through the development of environmental professionals, and (ⅲ) by initiating the assembly of a broad range of organisations to form a society, i.e. the Society for the Environment, so that we can be a beacon for a sustainable future. My message is that lifestyle changes are coming and that we will all feel better for them. We can then live for the present without fear of the future.
