From the first phone call with the chief pilot in Dubai it was evident this was going to be an interesting and exciting challenge. His first words to me were "Caravan drivers are a dime a dozen but finding someone who knows how to safely fly a floatplane like this is really hard." From my years of water flying in Alaskan air-taxi environments I knew many folks who could safely handle a Caravan amphib in demanding conditions, but I understood that what he was saying was true. I also understood the dynamics of the situation much more clearly as he further explained that using a floatplane was a new endeavor for their UAE-based company, whose forte till then had been operating lease-backed corporate jets around the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia and Europe.
