Brian Ricketts was flying his Cessna 172 near the "designated places" of Open Hall-Red Cliff on the eastern tip of Newfoundland, Canada, when friend John King, who was paddling his kayak in the frigid waters, took this dramatic photo. That chunk of ice was about 10 stories high, Ricketts reports. His 172 is powered by a Lycoming 0-320 with a Powerflow exhaust and RAM STC that gets him 160 hp. Ricketts is an air traffic controller at Gander, which handles all flights over the North Atlantic.
