FOR ME, IT'S ALWAYS THE SAME STORY: Someone buys an airplane in a distant place and needs to get it home. In this case, the airplane was a 1941 Grumman Widgeon located in Houston, Texas, and the new owner was Mike Bergt of Anchorage, Alaska. These two places are separated by about three thousand nautical miles, but that interval can better be described in terms of vast expanses of desert, several tall mountain ranges, rugged stretches of Pacific Coast, thirty-one degrees of latitude, and the vagaries of winter weather in at least four climatic regions. The trip spans the full grandeur of the American West.
