I've always thought of the Grumman Widgeon as an unfinished project, and I attribute that to its era. Grumman had a lot going on in 1941 and I suspect that when it was apparent that the first draft of the Widgeon had some rough edges, they decided to just send it out the door as it was and get on with more pressing business, like building Hellcats. The result was a seaplane with some character issues, the most serious of which is a mean porpoising tendency. When things settled down after the war Grumman made some changes to the hull, but that didn't really help. In the end the Widgeon was successful in its niche, but I've always thought it was a hasty wartime design that could have been better.
