It began as a simple assignment: Jump in the C-185 floatplane, fly up to the St. Mary's Trooper Post, and pick up some paperwork for a court case that was to begin the next day in Bethel. Since it was a non-emergency task in my job with the Alaska Department of Public Safety, my supervisor granted the authorization to take my wife (a civilian employee of the department) along on the short trip. What could possible go wrong with this plan?
