Thankfully, midair collisions are rare in aviation. Each year, about 10 collisions involving 20 airplanes occur, and about half of the people survive. Any accident is too many, but 10 midairs a year is not outrageous considering that 225,000 U.S. general aviation aircraft have a few hundred fatal accidents each year. Given the paucity of seaplanes among that 225,000 count, few should be involved in midair collisions. Yet there have been four seaplane midairs in just 20 months, representing 20 percent of all midair collisions in that nearly two-year period.
