Mid-September brings the ritual of closing and securing the cabin for the winter. We have a beautiful log cabin on a lake about 80 nm northwest of Anchorage, and this time of the year we go out, board up the windows, disconnect the water, and generally put the place to sleep for the season. We go back out on skis or by snow machine in early spring, but forgo the pleasure of running water.
