The contest to name the new seaplane base planned for the city of Tavares, Florida, drew some 120 entries, but in the end the city council decided to go with a highly traditional name, the Tavares Seaplane Base. The Seaplane Pilots Association promoted the naming contest to its members, who reportedly responded with a number of interesting suggestions. City council members said they opted for the straightforward name-suggested by local resident Betty Burleigh-because it is similar to the approach that seaplane bases around the country have taken with respect to naming, and because it has the city's name in it, making it easy to remember and locate on charts.
