A new entrant in the LSA (Light Sport Aircraft) arena made a splashy Los Angeles introduction last June of a stylish amphibious flying boat called the Icon A5. With the help of some recognizable names including Eclipse Aircraft founder and CEO Vern Raburn, lunar astronaut Buzz Aldrin, five-time U.S. Aerobatics and Red Bull Air Race champion Kirby Chambliss, and motocross legend Jeremy McGrath, Icon founder and CEO Kirk Hawkins unveiled a mockup of the LSA seaplane. The Icon design features a folding wing, carbon-fiber airframe, sports car cockpit, emergency ballistic parachute, patent-pending Propeller Guard, angle of attack indicator, and its own towable launch and retrieval trailer. Power will come from a 100-hp Rotax 912 ULS engine, and top speed is projected at 120 mph.
