摘要

This is a very special issue, as it marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of the IWRA in late 1971. This has been an occasion for us to begin to assemble a historical record. A first pass appears herein in a survey by Pierre Balzergue of the Executive Office and myself. We hope to put some flesh on this skeleton, with the help of those who know more about it than we do, and to continue to publish pieces and reflections on IWRA history in subsequent issues and on the IWRA webpage. Two figures who played a big role in the early history of IWRA have made contributions to this issue - Malin Falkenmark, who discusses the role of the interdisciplinary IWRA in setting water strategies for the 21 st century; and Sandor Csallany, one of the pioneers who had the crazy idea to create an international water resources organization.
