摘要

The papers in this issue came through the review and revision process one by one, but in the end fell into two neat categories, representing the range of concerns and approaches of IWRA members that we like to offer: four papers explore linkages between water and poverty in light of various state and market approaches, while two use physical science techniques to look at the effects of changing rainfall regimes on watersheds, one quite large and one relatively small. We also have an extensive book conversation on water soft paths.rnThe first three articles apply various economic approaches. Srinivasan et al. investigate how residents in Chennai cope with typical infrastructure lags in the supply of water from public utilities in the face of rapid urbanization. In particular, using a systems-modelling approach, they look at the important role played by informal tankers in time of drought. Although not providing a significant share of total water supply, tankers play a critical role during periods of drought by bringing water in from peri-urban agricultural well fields, and can be a significant expenditure for households.
