IN A MATURE ECOSYSTEM, THERE ARE PROCESSES atwork that replenish and renew natural communities.Wildfires are natural ecological perturbations thatare essential for maintaining ecosystem health andfunction by contributing to increased biodiversity andenhanced biogeochemical cycling. However, increasedfrequency of destructive wildfires, often a result of poorland management, is of growing concern, especially inthe wake of global climate change. Besides the obviousloss to critical infrastructure and personal property,the changes within the landscape are also devastating.Scorched landscapes are susceptible to accelerated soilloss, and the threat of geohazards such as landslides alsoincreases. Debris flows are considered one of the mostdevastating and destructive impacts from wildfires. Themass movement of sediment from the landscape has thepotential to impair vital water resources. Such an effectcan produce additional hardship for areas that are waterstressed, and may degrade sensitive aquatic ecosystems(see Youberg et al., this issue).
